about the film
The Merantau Myth is a poetic documentary that follows a granddaughter’s journey to uncover the life of her Baweanese grandmother, Sam, whose story feels more like a myth than a memory. Weaving through Bawean, Singapore, and the evolution of kampong life to rapid urbanization, the film explores the generational impact of migration, cultural assimilation, and the loss of oral traditions. Through family rituals, ancestral stories, and the erasure of kampongs in favor of high-rise HDB flats, the film reveals the universal search for belonging in a world constantly reshaping itself.
